Today marked my first day at school. All first days of school are alike:

  • I woke up early, but still managed to be rushing out the door for the bus
  • I was a mixture of emotions, excited but nervous - will I remember how to do 'school'?
  • I managed to get lost, even though their entire school fits in one building
  • I barely remember anyone's name, even though I met many lovely, friendly people!

My position is as an Education Assistant (i.e. a Canadian Teacher's Aide) in a kindergarten class. The children are five years old, equivalent to a new entrants or Year 1 class in New Zealand.

Today was the 100th day at school, which was a fun introduction to school life! Just like we do in New Zealand, classes keep track of the number of days at school as a part of their daily calendar maths, to introduce and reinforce concepts of place value.

The highlight of my day was recess. All of the children put on their jackets, gloves and snowshoes and played (without any hesitation) on the snow covered playground and the frozen field. I never thought I would have to decide if making snow angels and building a tower out of chunks of ice were appropriate playground games!
